What If.
He wondered what if there was a larger race beyond his own world. The ancients had worshipped gods who resided somewhere nebulous, even somewhere beyond earth. The Vikings had Thor. The Greeks and Romans, each had their own gods. Indeed most established cultures had some form of deity. Antony looked to the stars and wondered.
Then as he caught sight of a ant hill Antony decided that it was better to not know. For he thought that if he was as an ant in the scale of things, he was happier being able to roam the earth. He did not fancy being an ant out alone in the universe; where giant roamed freely. And might squash him without knowing that he was a living thinking being. A being, who enjoyed his life.
I agree! I think it is sometimes better to not know. Great story Mike!
I agree, we need to learn and expand our knowledge, but only within what we can handle. Thank you PJ
Yep, better to be happy and content, rather than going mad contemplating the nature of our existence. Nice philosophising.
Thank you Iain, I could easily drift into being a philosopher, but you are right it would probably drive me mad, so I will stick to writing fiction.
You do have a point there. Who knows how big (or how small for that matter) creatures are there in this universe. History of our knowledge is like peeling off layers of an onion – it is at the end we realize that there is nothing at the core.
Enjoyed this read.
I am so pleased to read your comments, thank you Yarnspinnerr
We did go with really similar takes here. I love the line “He did not fancy being an ant out alone in the universe; where giant roamed freely.” Great story!
So pleased to read your comment. Commenting is something I find rather hard.
Same. I never know what to say.
