Day Eight of the lockdown
For me this period of lockdown is a time to rekindle my interest in historical characters. In particular those individuals who used the medium of writing to reach kindred spirits. One such person was John Ruskin (1819-1900). He wrote about the connections between nature and society. Topical in today’s situation… He produced essays, pamphlets and books to connect with a wide audience. His last home Brantwood, along with it’s gardens is one of my favourite places to spend a few quiet hours.
Footnotes:
The prompt photograph to me, highlights the disconnect between nature and humanity.
For the present due to a virus!, Brantwood is temporarily closed.
Dear Michael,
It is a good time to reflect on history, isn’t it? Love the dog.
Shalom and wishes for continued good health,
Rochelle
He loves to watch the world or play ball. And keeps me on my toes.
The lockdown is changing all our lives. I hope when we return to ‘normal’ we appreciate the things we have lived without – the friends and family we haven’t seen, the freedom to go out when we choose etc.
I agree whole heartily, Clare.
I’ve read Ruskin. Good appraisal.
Thank you Antony.
Reflection in this times makes sense. We end up wiser by learning from others.
We certainly do, as long as pick the right teachers
Reading is always a good escape from reality
It certainly can be, the trick is finding books which fire the imagination.
We have every opportunity now to catch up on our reading. I’d just prefer if it were not compulsory.
Just look forward to the day you can return to Brantwood! Stay safe.
Thank you so much Iain.
This is a time that we can choose to use in a positive manner.
Reading, writing, whatever!
That is true, though many may find it hard with some of their pastimes denied. Stay safe Dale.
Yes. People do like to whine…
Wonderful and timely telling. Is that your adorable furbaby?
Lovely to read your comments…He is quite a old furbaby, but still acts like a adolescent. Stay safe
Thanks and glad he finds a way to stay chipper.
I’d heard of Ruskin, but never ventured into his writings. Maybe I will 🙂
I am not sure where I would start, he was a prolific writer.
Good to hear an advocate for Ruskin. He’s been underrated.
He is certainly underrated. In my view, much that the 19th century developed has been neglected
These times are making us think.
They certainly are, I hope that humanity will develop world wide and much improved health care for all.
Yes I hope so too. 🙂
It’ll be great to be able to visit our favourite places again, Mike. We were intending to go to a Van Gogh exhibition that’s visiting London but all that’s sadly on hold for now. Still, as you say it gives us time to contemplate and study
The inability to undertake such visits is stressful. Many must be finding it almost intolerable. As well as reviewing written material, section by section! My garden is getting very much tidier! Take good care of yourself
Hopefully soon you’ll be able to visit again!
