Cold Tears
Tears freeze like diamonds. Everyone had expected global warming. But what came was a new ice age, as the sun faded. Solar panels froze over, wind turbines shattered in the extreme cold. Humanity went deep.
We are like ghosts, you can see our skeletons though translucent skin. We use repurposed items recovered from our ancestors rubbish. A panel of wire mesh serves as my bed, whilst an old Christmas decoration reflects my hairless image.
Antifreeze allows my blood to move. It is said we are the last generation. Yet a child moves within me.
I remember when we feared the coming ice age. Just before we realised we were scared of quite the wrong thing
Cold or heat, both spell trouble
Nicely told story with a great last line!
Thank you Penny, I struggled with this story, and spent a lot of time on trying to add to the last line. Your comment makes me glad that I did not. Mike
Dear Michael,
A rather chilling take on the prompt. The last line certainly leaves room for more.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thank you Rochelle, I tried to write more, and failed.
Miracles can occur even in dystopian times.
I found myself left wondering if the child will survive, I have decided that it will,
A powerfully descriptive tale. Well done.
I appreciate your feedback, thank you very much. Mike
What a scary situation…. Ominous last line, too.
Well done!
Thank you Dale, as I found myself writing this story, I struggled as it made me rather anxious,
A story full of warning and chilling – in many ways! – suspense, Michael.
Great piece of writing.
Thank you Jenny Anything is possible, even an ice age.
A tiny ray of hope in a broken world.
Thank you Drailman, the future is hidden.
A frightening tale well told. Our ancestors lived quite well during the last ice age, but this one sounds like pure horror.
Sorry about the horror element.
the child may survive but doomed anyway under the circumstances.
My muse has indicated the child lived, but her story is very complicated
What a fascinating dystopic tale. Grim times.
Grim indeed, but I hope for better things
Chilling.
Ronda
PS it’s COURTesy of…not curtsey like what you do to the queen.
Hi Ronda, in my defence, I was not firing on all cylinders, as frustratingly I am now in hospital, acute infection
