Fever
Visitors where told not to come, the risk was high, but they came anyway.
Until recently the true meaning of fever had been forgotten. Although once every single country had a similar word. In England we had a horrifying medieval word – fefor. A word that was spoken in a hushed whisper along with murmured insinuations.
Now once again abandoned fever hospitals are the most numerous type of hospital throughout the world. But this time they came to late. Pristine silence has returned to Earth.
All gone? That’s a shame. I liked people
Mostly so do I. But nature may see us differently
Pristine silence sounds quite nice actually…
After a week of grinding roadworks, a little silence would not go amiss. Thank you Iain
Dear Michael,
Sad tale, although pristine silence doesn’t sound like a bad thing. Well done.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thank you Rochelle,
It would be a devastating infectious disease indeed, that wiped out mankind – although I can just about imagine a genetically modified disease succeeding. What a horrifying way for the world to end.
Definately horrifying, Rather like the medieval period and the Black Death plague
A horrid way for life to start over on a planet…
Very true, yet perhaps that is what happened to the dinosaurs. Then we arrived!
A horrifying scene. Though I guess Mother Nature’s fairly happy about it.
Nature certainly has the power to bring havoc to humanity’s dreams.
Fever has got her prey. No one is alive. Silence everywhere.
But for how long, we followed the dinosaurs. Perhaps now we are more trouble to nature than they where !
Ah, such a desolate silence!
But for how long, for we followed the dinosaurs !!!
Not a nice way for life to end, but a possibility. A sobering thought. I like the reference to the medieval word, and the connection between the hushed whispering of that word, and the eventual silence of the world.
Sobering indeed…I was grateful to read your thoughts on hushed whispering, thank you.
Beautiful writing, Michael. With most of us gone there would be pristine silence–at least for a while.
Thank you so much. Pristine silence only for a short period I suspect.
If people continue to refuse to vaccinate their kids, this just could happen.
It certainly could, yet when I was asked to attend for a anti shingles vaccine, I hesitated !!!
A sad but well-written story, Michael. People forget and fear the prevention more than the illness. German measles can even cause a deformed child if the mother catches it when she’s pregnant. Let’s hope there isn’t a plague that kills everyone. My mother said she went through whooping cough with my older brother in the 1920’s and it scared her half to death. Why do so many people have to learn the hard way, the very hard way. 🙁 — Suzanne
Thank you Patricia, I fear that in general human beings have for gotten the lessons of the past when it comes to contagious diseases. whooping cough can be dreadful. Sadly I have had occasion to nurse individuals who have been severely effected and damaged by infectious diseases
So fever wipes us out before we can do it to ourselves, I suppose that would be a better solution as then the animals survive and they deserve to
It would be, but in my muses take on this story, many of the animal species died alongside us. Not good… I agree a better solution would be for all the animals etc to survive, but I think that humanity has greatly unsettled the natural order when it comes to land based animals. Sorry that I am getting rather philosophical…
It makes sense that fevers is the way humanity dies out. We have Dengue fever, Typhoid fever, as well as a variety of others. A very eerie piece, Michael. Well done!
Thank you Brenda. Eerie is right, I was thinking of fever hospitals closing in the 1960. The history of such hospital should not be forgotten.
That would be a dreadful silence. Nicely done, Michael.
Thank you Sandra, At the moment we live in an very noisy world.
