The Lady of Eikefjord
When the Lady was around, families locked up their sons and daughters. Whilst husbands hide their wives if they valued them. No one living near a river or close to the sea was safe from the marauding Lady. Johan had built her well and his signature figurehead had become very apt. Each voyage the Lady made, resulted in her gaining young slaves. The latest batch of Celtic children looked as it they might fetch a good price. Johan’s son took a interest in one particular girl. He pictured her with flowers in her hair. She would make a great bride…
No one wanted their children to become slaves. What a boat Johan build for the Vikings!
Nothing stands still, not even boat building. Thank you Abhijit
I misunderstood this at first. I’d read the lady as a bisexual spirit rather than a ship, and that Johan dug a well to try to contain her. When I got to the end, I realised I must have made a mistake and went back. But interesting the stories readers make of a writer’s work
I now see how this flash can be seen as you saw it. Sometimes when reading comment on other stories, I find myself seeing a differing side to the story, which is fascinating. As was your feedback, thank you Neil
A frightening time to live in what with Vikings marauding around the place.
I guess that there have always been marauding individuals and groups, however the Vikings use of the sea and rivers gives them extra interest for me. Thank you draliman
A good time to be living inland, I think. Nicely done.
In deed I hope that it was, although the Viking’s travelled far and wide. Thank you Sandra
It must have been pure horror to see the sails on the horizon. Excellent tale, Michael.
Pure horror indeed, thank you Gabriele
Dangerous times, realistic horror.Well done, Michael.
Dangerous indeed, although I guess that there have always been marauders down the centuries. So there is plenty for me to write about. Thank you Granonine
The Lady is a ship of doom.
Indeed for some, although perhaps others used the hostilities to gain a advantage. Thank you Iain
Dear Michael,
A very unique take on the prompt. Engaging and imaginative.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thank you so much Rochelle.
Refreshingly different albeit a grim tale.
Click to read my FriFic tale!
Thank you Keith, one can only imagine the terror of seeing the sail of a Viking ship approaching
I had to look up maurding – I think you meant marauding…
I like this take on the ship being the Lady… a head spinner of a tale.
You are correct about my incorrect use of the word ’maurding’ sorry about any confusion it caused. I am a sucker for historical type nautical tales. Thank you Dale
Was great!
As others have said, I can’t imagine the horror of seeing the Lady on the horizon. I’d take my children and head for the hills (if that were possible). Well-writting story, Michael!
The Lady has now gone to her rest as part of a Viking funeral
Human trafficking/the slave trade is such a horrible part of being human. At first I thought this was a ghost/horror story. I was right about the horror.
The Lady was part of the so called Dark Age, and as such has now gone to her grave as part of a Viking funeral
Sounds like a lady that needs to be put to rest.
This Lady has now gone to the bottom of the ocean as part of a Viking funeral
Despicable!
But a good telling. 🙂
Thank you so much Dawn
