Fire Pit
February is a great month to tidy the garden. I decided to start with the fire pit. A quick brush to remove twigs and leaves was all it needed. Then I prepared my seat, a old chunky wooden bench; that looks as if it will need a wash and oil at some point.
Why you are a cheeky fellow, I expect that you have come to share the heat. Do hedgehogs eat cheese and pickle?. I expect not. Well warm yourself whilst I pinch a bit of the cats food for you. Don’t scorch those toes.
Footnote, Genre: Pure Fiction.
Heart-warming tale, Michael. I like hedgehogs!
I have a soft spot for hedgehogs, sadly they are getting quite thin on the ground,
Sweet. Hedgehogs are so cute, even if not real pet-able.
I love to see and hearing them as I am walking my dog, sadly they are getting rare.
Charming story, Michael. I love the use of animals in such a magical way.
Thank you Dawn, I was pleased to read your feedback
Dear Michael,
Such a sweet little snippet. I could just picture it.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thank you Rochelle, I do love just sitting looking into a fire, it bring back fond memories. There used to be so many hedgehogs around then,
Sweet. Reads like a fairy tale.
And I’ll tell you what. Over on this side of the pond, there is not fire pit cleaning! I can’t even find it under all that snow!
I love photographing snow, but I can only image the amount of snow you get. Quebec is beautiful
A warming end-of-winter tale Michael. It can’t come quick enough for me, or the hedgehogs.
I am sure that the hedgehogs will agree with you.
Sounds like he is a welcome visitor…
He certainly is, for he generally sits quiet, with a twinkle in his eyes
Cute. Love hedgehogs. They like peannuts, the ones you put out for the birds.
I am told badgers love peanuts also, but Brock never calls at my fire pit. He would be most welcome if he did.
Didn’t know that! We have badgers down the road.
Do they misbehave? They are great diggers I am told.
We haven’t seen any evidence but apparently the guy who lives opposite has had a lot of damage done to his garden (it’s beautiful) so isn’t too well pleased. We don’t see them often, but smell the disturbed earth so know the sett is still active.
Sadly badgers do not understand human etiquette. But hedgehogs they work hard to help gardeners by eating the slugs etc.
We had a family of hedgehogs visit our garden in our first house. Great entertainment with their little ways and characteristics. We rigged up a water feeder with a frisbee and lemonade bottle.
I like the use of a frisbee, great idea.
It worked a treat.
What a happy little snippet, and extra smiles for the visiting hedgehog! I would nip some cat food for my new friend, too.
Such a sweet story.
Hedgehogs are so cute! I don’t think the cat will notice that some food is missing. At least I hope not! Cute story!
Thank you Nan, my cat would certainly notice, but the hedgehogs need was greater, and my cat could do to lose someweight, but then so could I.
Nice friendship bond between man and the animal. Hope the hedgehog understands the good intent.
Thank you Abhijit, one can never tell with hedgehogs, they make a lot of noise but say very little
Cute.
Haven’t met a hedgehog
Good one about the toes.
Wonder what he thought!
Thank you Sabina, generally hedgehogs are nocturnal creatures, often one only hear they rustling in the undergrowth.
Simply delightful Michael. Perhaps we should all have a help-a-hedgehog day!
Brilliant, what a good idea, help-a-hedgehog day is,
Lovely story. I’m glad the hedgehog found food and shelter!
Thank you, hedgehogs need all the help they need.
A sweet story, Michael. February is early for the poor hedgehog to wake up. Not too tidy gardens help them.
Thank you Gabriele, the poor fellow was so hungry. P.s. sadly these days my garden is far from tidy. One could say it is wildlife friendly.
Cute and delightful tale, Michael.
Thank you so much.
What a nice surprise to uncover in his fire pit. Love hedgehogs!
I had to warn him to not get to close, hedgehogs are great
Aww that was sweet. Lovely in fact.
Thank you so much, I really am pleased you liked it. I love it when I am walking the dog at night and see hedgehogs
That’s so sweet, though I have never seen hedgehogs in India.
There are many varieties of hedgehogs, but they are generally nocturnal and there are quite large parts of the world where they are absent
Awww … nature visiting with you. Cute tale, Michael.
I’d be scared though. : )
No need to be scared, Isadora, they are shy creatures who generally will do anything to stay out of the way of people
Gorgeously heart-warming.
It is so kind of you to say so, thank you
Lovely. He has his own little piece of paradise, I think.
One may think so, but he tells me that I cut the grass to short. Thank you Margaret
Lovely story, Michael. I’ve kept a pile of logs and woody cuttings under my cherry tree as our neighbour told us their are hedgehogs round here. No sign yet, just a lot of urban foxes!
Hedgehogs love wood litter, but sadly foxes will disturb their hibernation. Does your cherry tree have edible fruit.
Yes, it does have edible fruit, Michael. Do you think that will attract the hogs?
Freshly picked cherries, are one of the great pleasures in life, in fact so are most soft fruit. Whether Hedgehogs know that I am not sure.
We’re lucky – we have an apple tree, a cherry, a rhubarb patch, some raspberry canes, a few strawberry plants. The fruit is patchy and spread out – you never get a full bowl of anything but cherries – but I love it
Warm and friendly story. I enjoyed it.
There are so many subject to write about, but every now and again I do enjoy writing about nature and the creatures who rub along side us. Thank you
Nice to hear of a hedgehog benefiting from a garden fire and not accidentally getting roasted in it. Nice tale Michael. I like to hear them out and about as well, they make a hell of a racket for such small animals.
They certainly let you know when they are on the move, thank you Micheal
Lovely tale. The hedgehog definitely needs to keep its toes away from the fire.
He certainly did, but he was intelligent and did as he was told. Glad that you liked the tale
I love hedgehogs, what a nice voice, and great of you to bring him cat food and not milk
Thank you Björn, my cat was less pleased that the hedgehog got some of her food.
Hedgehogs -I don’t like them. But your story made me love them a bit 🙂
I was so pleased to read your comment, must write more about hedgehogs, so you will love them a lot.
i find this story very comforting. very nice. 🙂
I am so pleased to read that, thank you plaridel
