The Bear
Your journeys may be long and dangerous Soini, but you should leave Akureyri. You may take all your tools. The Dawn Rider is a stout vessel, and her crew are fine sailors, you could not be in better hands. Go now my son and may the gods be with you.
One year later, busy carving a replacement head for the Viking vessel, Soini failed to notice that the crew had gone ashore. So when the polar bear climbed up and over the side of Dawn Rider, he expected members of the crew to take up axes and shields and kill it.
However by the time he had realised that he was alone, the bear was towering over him. So he drove his whittling knife upwards. With a roar of pain the bear struck out at him, sending Soini flying through the air.
Luck was with him that day; dazed he grabbed a axe and struck out. With the bears roar ringing in his ears, he repeatedly struck the bear. When the crew returned they found Soini holding the bears head aloft. Now Soini is known as Torben Scarface, the best carver of Heads. Be they dragons, humans or bears.
Has the ring of a true Norse legend.
Thanking you Iain. My original story was to be about a Victorian doll maker, but the story metamorphed into a Viking adventure!
Awesome. Now that’s the way to make sure Viking scalds (bards) sing songs about you. Love the action in this one.
So pleased that the scalds will sing songs. Thank you.
Such dramatic pictures. Soini is a Viking not to be messed with.
He would be the first to say that the gods were on his side. Thank you Sarah Ann.
Names are indeed magical when bestowed for courageous deeds. 🙂
And songs will be sung, thank you julespaige.
Excellent imagery Michael
