Dreaming of the Past

Herbert wondered how it had come to this, pulling a dray was not what his lineage had been breed for. Animal lore still recalled the tale of one of his ancestors carrying King Richard into battle. Whilst the owls told tales about his ancestors taking part in jousting competitions. All Herbert was expected to do was pull a dray and remember where to stop for deliveries. If he had wanted he could have walked on by, for these days his driver often fell asleep.

Today was no exception, the sky was blue, the sun strong, and Ned was asleep. Herbert started to dream as he allowed his hoofs to do the walking. He past the Red Lion and the Kings Arms, and even the Wheatsheaf. Today Herbert was as tired as Ned the drayman.

“Whoa old fellow, where you be going?” Herbert lifted his head to see a gentleman of the cloth, then as he breathed in deeply, he smelt the fresh air of country lanes.  He had allowed his hoofs to carry him out of Hook Norton. Now he saw the green hedgerows and smelt wild flowers. ”I think old chap it is time you and your driver retired”.

Word Count 200 words.

The prompt picture reminded me of leisure time and retirement.

I do see you
