Remembering that Day
Have ever seen cattle released in the spring after spending the winter cooped up in a barn. If you have you will know how we felt the day. Some ran jumping with joy, whilst others cried as they danced. A few refused to believe they stood staring in fright.
The fans were turned off. The walls that our ancestors built were dismantled. Then we found those great doors that had been sealed for millennia: we hammered and dragged them open. We were released from the vast networks of storage caverns which had saved humanity when Adrasteia came. Liberty.
Gorgeous. I saw them streaming out, silhouetted at the gates by the sunshine
Thank you – It is a lovely sight to see animals released into natures arms. I image we would feel the same.
Dear Michael,
The feeling of liberty after confinement is tangible. Well done.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Rochelle, I am so pleased by your comment, thank you.
Nicely done, Michael. Free at last.
Freedom to roam at will, is getting a rare commodity these days. O dear I think that I have just given myself another story to write. But thank you for your feed back, it is appreciated.
Oh, wow, what a wonderful capture of liberation! Reminds me of the final scene of “Logan’s Run” when all the people begin coming back out onto the surface. Sooo cool! 🙂 <3
I was so pleased by your comments. I need to watch Logan’s Run.
Funny, I was thinking the same thing. Been a while since I pulled out that DVD. Maybe this weekend I’ll have time.
Having time, that is a problem. I feel like I could write for a hundred years. It is strange, I could not write a letter let alone a story, for the first fifty years of my life!
And…. breathe in that freedom!
Thank you so much Dale,
Interesting that you saw gates. Humanity freed after some dystopian catastrophe drove then underground. It does look like a bright and cheery day.
This piece of flash fiction, is a spin off from a longer story. Which was inspired by storage vaults for natures bounty.
Very atmospheric – let’s hope humanity uses its second chance well!
I also hope that they will, thank you for the feedback, it really helps my understanding of how a story comes over. Thank you
Excellent feeling of emerging from the darkness – or as we call it in Scotland, the start of Spring! Well done Michael.
Thank you Iain
Well told, apocalypse over.
Thank you. It seems that this apocalyptic event comes round every few millennia
Thanks for providing a bit of sunshine. We’re still digging out from under a snowstorm where I live.
Sounds just like how things use to be here, sixty years ago. Glad you enjoyed the story, hope that warmer weather is soon with you.
This was expertly told. I sensed the fever of liberation.
That is so kind of you to say, thank you.
The excitement is vibrant… clearly felt in the jumping and dancing.
I am so pleased that the excitement came across. Thank you for your feedback it is appreciated
I can imagine how liberating and exhilarating that would be. Very well-described!
Yet frightening also, like us being teleported to another unknown world. Thank you for your feedback, it was appreciated
I’m guessing that some of the occupants of that cavern were born there and had never seen the outside. Your story makes me want to know more.
I am pleased – Remembering that Day – is a just a small slice from a much longer story that I am slowly working on.
It sounds interesting and full of potential. By longer story, do you mean long short-story, novella, novel, or whatever it happens to end up as when you reach the end?
So far there is a beginning and the start of an ending. I see a novella I think.
I could feel liberation, all capitalised.
Thank you so much, Neel
You’ve created a great sense of freedom and exhilaration pent up and released at last. And with the help of cows which I adore and have seen when put out to pasture, even after milking they get quite frisky to be back in the field.
It is lovely to watch cows as they are released after over wintering inside. Thank you for your continuing comments, they are appreciated.
I agree with all the comments that you created a great sense of freedom. It was the image of the cows frozen, unbelieving that really captured it for me.
I am so pleased to hear that, thank you for your comments.
Thank you for sharing that image of the cattle running for freedom. It was very moving. I really enjoyed your take on the prompt. Well done. xx Rowena
It is lovely to see cattle being released after they have over wintered. Thank you for your kind comments.
I really felt that feeling of freedom as I read this. Brilliant.
Click to read my 100 words!
Keith I am grateful for your feedback, thank you. Mike
I felt the sense of freedom in this. It was expertly described.
Thank you so much Clare
Great take. I assume all the clocks had stopped too. But I’m not sure that anybody would remember what cattle were, let alone the seasons.
You are right, but then perhaps the narrator is omnipotent! Your comments will help greatly with my planning of the central section of this novella.
They should have an abundance of natural fertilizer after keeping the cattle penned up so long. I can almost smell the fresh air.
It certainly did smell, they were glad to get out.
oh, the feel of fresh air. it must be liberating, indeed.
So true; at least I alway find it so.
A great capture of a possible tomorrow.
Let’s hope that the future is brighter, than many of us fear. Thank you for your comment.
Most welcome.
Well, described. I do know how they felt that day!
Thank you Dawn,
Indeed after a century of people living life locked up that would be such relief to be let out if the tunnels and see sunlight. The comparison to cattle is very apt.
Thank you for the positive comment, it is appreciated
*sorry a meant millennia not century
Great writing, the feeling of liberation is so real. And I love the concept. Humans are very adaptive, but experiencing the freedom of a planet after being cooped up for so long… marvellous.
Thank you, this piece of flash fiction has its roots in a novella that I am trying to develope/write.
