A New Start
The windmill had remained empty for many years, silence ruled in it’s cold heart. The miller Mr Johnson had died intestate and family wrangles had kept the mill silence for twenty years. Today a new owner had purchased the mill Mr Ali Qurishi, he intended to put the mill back to work. His first action was to fetch the two family querns and place them in the mill, good karma was everything. Now he fetched the family and told them to set the querns to work and produce stone ground flour. Fame came in small portions, the family prospered.
I’ve learned a new word – quern. Thanks, Michael
Interesting story. Giant oaks from little acorns grow, when fertilised with hard work and dedication. Good one.
Dear Michael,
Quern…new word for me, too. No need for apostrophe though. querns, not quern’s. An apostrophe denotes possession not plural. Aside from that, a good story.
Shalom,
Rochelle
When will I learn, it seems never, perhaps there is a loose wire in the wiring of my brain. Thank you Rochelle.
Great to be able to cover so many years in such a short piece. Nicely done.
Loved the history packed into this tale. Nice one.
Cleverly worked tale, Michael.
Nice knowing the actual word for these 🙂 Fame Does come in small portions…nice purposeful little message there 😉
I believe that there is a more correct term for this style of quern but my memory fails me. I am glad that the messages came across. Mike
I like that idea – bringing something new from something old and dilapidated, a phoenix from the ashes. Super, hopeful story
I am pleased that you enjoyed the story. Thank you Mike
My pleasure 🙂
I think this shows entrepreneurship in the best of ways.
Thank you, the reuse of old buildings in a sympathetic way is close to my heart. I am glad that my story worked. At first I did think that this prompt picture was going to beat me.
Combining tradition with the new, and thriving. Isn’t that how it should be? Great story.
Absolutely, I am so pleased that you liked this story. Mike
Lots of stuff concentrated in that story. Good work, Mike!
I am glad you enjoyed the story. Mike
Cute!
I liked the sense of old is gold and old way of doing things yields good results, in time!
Thank you, today we had a garage sale, and we ended up gaining a 1950 typewriter and 1950 record player. My grandchildren loved using the old gear!!!
I like this very much.
Nice, bringing the mill back to life and prosperity. From the context I guessed what a “quern” was but Googled it just to be sure 🙂
It is good to see neglected buildings put back to use, thank you for commenting. Mike
A well told story of success. Taking time often pays off.
A lovely family story.
This shows what the family accomplished by working together. We can all learn from this story. Good writing, Mike. 🙂 — Suzanne
Thank you, Suzanne.
